RESUMO

To determine the association between visual impairment (VI) and some mental disorders using the general health questionnaire (GHQ) in individuals aged 60 years and above in Tehran, Iran. The present population-based cross-sectional study was conducted on people aged 60 and older in Tehran, Iran using multi-stage cluster sampling. After selecting the samples, examinations including visual acuity measurement, refraction, and slit-lamp biomicroscopy were performed for all participants. The GHQ was used to examine mental disorders. Simple and multiple linear regressions were used to investigate the association between VI and mental disorders. Of the 3740 invitees, 3310 participated in the study (response rate: 88.50%). After applying the exclusion criteria, 2789 individuals were analyzed for this report. Mean score of physical, anxiety, social and depression disorders in people with and without VI was 3.74 ± 2.03, 5.81 ± 2.79, 7.56 ± 1.91, 1.32 ± 1.90, and 3.14 ± 1.76, 4.93 ± 2.71, 8.09 ± 1.99, 0.91 ± 1.38, respectively. The total score of GHQ in participants with and without VI was 18.43 ± 4.75 and 17.07 ± 4.19, respectively. The association between GHQ subscales and total GHQ score with VI by multiple linear regression showed that VI had a statistically significant direct association with physical symptoms (ß = 0.37; 95% CI 0.12 to 0.62) and anxiety (ß = 0.48; 95% CI 0.16 to 0.81). Nevertheless, depression had a borderline association with VI (ß = 0.21; 95% CI - 0.03 to 0.45) and social dysfunction did not have a statistically significant association with VI in the final linear regression model and did not remain in the model. Total GHQ score had a statistically significant association with VI (ß = 1.02; 95% CI 0.39 to 1.64) in the presence of covariates. Regarding the association between VI and GHQ components, the physical symptoms had the highest R2 (R2 = 0.159). Patients with VI suffer more from anxiety, depression, and physical symptoms regardless of age, sex, education, and other effective variables. The coincidence of aging with VI and the association of VI with mental disorders emphasizes the importance of a broader view of the elderly and the aging process.

RESUMO

AIM: This study sought to compare two common risk stratification systems in terms of their diagnostic performance for the evaluation of thyroid malignancy. METHODS: The American College of Radiology (ACR) Thyroid Imaging, Reporting and Data System (TI-RADS) and the American Thyroid Association (ATA) guidelines were compared among 571 thyroid nodules with definitive fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology or postoperative histopathology. Ultrasound characteristics such as composition, echogenicity, shape, margin, size, and vascularity were assessed for each thyroid nodule. Diagnostic performance measures were determined and compared through receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, and decision curve analysis (DCA). RESULTS: Of 571 nodules, 65 (11.4%) were malignant. The AUC, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value were 0.691, 49.2%, 84.9%, 29.6%, and 92.8% for ATA guideline, and 0.776, 72.3%, 79.2%, 30.9%, and 95.7%, for ACR TI-RADS, respectively. ACR TI-RADS was more sensitive (p = 0.003), while the ATA guideline was more specific (p < 0.001). DCA demonstrated that the ACR TI-RADS provided a greater net benefit than the ATA guideline. In addition, the net reduction in unnecessary biopsies is higher for ACR TI-RADS than ATA guidelines. The total number of indicated biopsies and unnecessary FNA rates were lower in ACR TI-RADS compared to ATA guideline (293 vs. 527 and 80.2 vs. 87.8). ACR TI-RADS presented no biopsy indication in seven malignant nodules (all categorized as TR2), whereas ATA guideline missed one. Hypoechogenicity was the most significant predictor of malignancy (OR = 8.34, 95% CI: 3.75-19.45), followed by a taller-than-wide shape (OR = 6.73, 95% CI: 3.07-14.77). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that each system has particular advantages in the evaluation of thyroid nodules. ACR TI-RADS reduces unnecessary FNA rates, however, malignant nodules categorized as TR2 might be missed using this system. Further evaluation of this group of nodules using Doppler and other ultrasound modalities is recommended.

RESUMO

Compassion fatigue is a common complication in nurses, which can lead to burnout, job dissatisfaction, and a decline in the quality of patient care. This study aimed to investigate the impact of loving-kindness meditation on compassion fatigue of nurses working in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This cluster-blinded randomized clinical trial study was conducted on 66 NICU nurses in 2 educational hospitals selected. The intervention group received a 1-month online program for daily training and practice of loving-kindness meditation. The control group received miscellaneous files on mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic period. The Nursing Compassion Fatigue Inventory (NCFI) was filled out by the 2 groups, before and after the intervention. The results showed that the mean scores of the NCFI in the intervention group decreased significantly compared with before the intervention (P = .002). In comparison with the control group, there was a significant difference between the mean scores of the 2 groups after the intervention (P = .034). Among nurses working in NICU, loving-kindness meditation significantly reduces compassion fatigue after 1 month. These findings support the use of this intervention for nurses.

RESUMO

Objective: This study was designed to compare object relations and anger control between MS patients and normal individuals. Method : The present study was a cross-sectional case-control study with two groups: the case group (patients with MS) and the control group (normal controls without MS). 80 patients and 80 healthy individuals were selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria using a simple random sampling method. The research's data collection tool was a three-part questionnaire consisting of demographic information, the Bell Object Relations and the Reality Testing Inventory (BORRTI) and the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory 2 (STAXI-2). The data were analyzed by the SPSS software version 26 using descriptive and analytical statistics (stepwise regression). Results: The results showed that in terms of object relations, there was no significant difference between the two groups except in alienation of relations (P = 0.035). The results also showed that in general, there was no statistically significant difference between the anger index of the group of MS patients and the normal controls. However, 12.8% of MS patients were significantly different in state of anger, trait anger and anger control compared to normal individuals. This difference was especially higher in angry temperament (P = 0.025) and the anger expression-in (P = 0.04). Conclusion: Although patients with MS were not significantly different from healthy individuals in terms of intrapsychic and interpersonal functions in the context of object relations and anger management, it seems that more complex and multifaceted explanations lie in the results that need further research.

RESUMO

Background: One of the most prominent global health threats is antibiotic resistance, leading to infection treatment failure. The first Iranian antibiotic awareness week campaign was initiated to improve the prudent use and wise prescription of antibiotics. Materials and Methods: The Isfahan antibiotic awareness campaign was held from November 30 to December 6, 2019, among two targeted populations; the general population and health-care workers by Isfahan University of Medical Sciences. In this campaign held in the main squares, streets, and a city's referral hospital, various educational methods were used to aware and sensitize the general population and medical staff about antibiotics and microbial resistance. These methods include face-to-face training, brochures, advertisement posters and billboards around the city, educational videos, social media messages, retraining for medical doctors and medical specialists, and interviewing in the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcast. Results: Two hundred and twenty general practitioners, medical specialists, and residents participated in two retraining educational conferences in Al-Zahra Hospital, Isfahan, Iran. The mean score satisfaction of the two conferences was three from four. Nearly 2000 of the general population were under face-to-face educational programs whom after that, 83.6% had the correct answer to the questions around antimicrobial awareness. Conclusions: This campaign was an excellent experience as a pilot study with appealing issues. Further, activities are required to improve engagement with the target population and determine the impact of this campaign on antibiotic consumption and prescription behavior among the public and health-care professionals.

RESUMO

Lack of experience concerning the organic conversion period and its associated challenges have made it difficult for conventional farmers to convert to organic farming. In this study, using a combined life cycle assessment (LCA) with data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach, we investigated farming management strategies, and environmental, economic, and efficiency impacts of organic conversion tea farms (OCTF, N = 15) compared to conventional (CTF, N = 13) and organic (OTF, N = 14) tea farms in Wuyi County, China for a year-round (2019). We found that the OCTF reduced agricultural inputs (environmental impacts) and applied more manual harvesting (increased added value) to pull through the conversion period. According to the LCA results, OCTF showed a similar integrated environmental impact index compared with OTF but significantly (P < 0.05) lower than CTF at both midpoint and endpoint levels. In terms of economic assessment, OTF showed the significantly highest total revenue (18.7 thousand $ ha-1 yr-1) and profit (13.7 thousand $ ha-1 yr-1) (P < 0.05) among the farm types. In contrast, OCTF and CTF did not show significant differences in relation to these economic indicators (P > 0.05). The total cost and cost-profit ratio did not show significant differences among the three farm types. Considering the DEA analysis, there were no significant differences in the technical efficiency of all farm types. However, the eco-efficiency of OCTF and OTF was significantly higher than that of CTF. Therefore, conventional tea farms can survive the conversion period with competitive economic and environmental benefits. In this regard, policies should promote organic tea cultivation and agroecological practices to enhance the sustainable transformation of tea production systems.

RESUMO

Objectives: Hot flashes are unpleasant long-term complications of breast cancer. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a traditional Persian medicine containing extracts of Cichorium intybus L. (chicory) and Fumaria parviflora L. (Fumitory) extract syrup (CFS) compared with placebo when used as intended. Design: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Setting/Location: The Oncology Ward of Shahid Modarres Hospital (Tehran, Iran). Subjects: Breast cancer survivors undergoing hormone deprivation therapy. Interventions: Patients were randomly allocated to receive 5 mL CFS or placebo syrup three times a day, for 4 weeks. Outcome measures: The co-primary outcomes were self-reported daily hot flashes frequency and severity scores assessed using self-reported daily dairies, including 1 week of baseline data. Results: Of the 148 patients screened, 137 were eligible, and 96 were randomly allocated to receive either CFS (n = 48) or placebo (n = 48). All participants who returned their dairies were compliant and analyzed as randomized in the a priori per-protocol analysis. After 4 weeks of treatment, both the mean daily hot flashes frequency and severity score had reduced by 57% in the CFS group and 10% in the placebo group. The overall weekly mean daily hot flashes frequency (effect size ηp2 0.221, p < 0.001, n = 66) and severity scores (effect size ηp2 0.160, p = 0.001, n = 66) were significantly lower in the CFS group compared with the placebo group (one-within one-between repeated-measures analysis of variance adjusted for baseline). CFS was well tolerated, with similar proportions of serious and nonserious adverse events occurring in both groups. Conclusions: This is the first study to report the effects of chicory or fumitory for the treatment of hot flashes. The findings provide preliminary evidence that CFS can improve hot flashes in breast cancer survivors undergoing hormone deprivation therapy. More research is warranted to confirm its effectiveness, safety, and mechanisms of action. Clinical Trial Registration: IRCT20210226050506N1.

RESUMO

This study explores how a vegetation cover (VC) index can be employed as a pollution warning tool in gold mining areas in the Northwest of Iran. The analysis included the following: (a) the extraction of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) maps from Landsat images in three zones, i.e., mining operations, upstream areas without any exploration, and the downstream area of the mining activities, (b) calculation of the zones' VC, (c) investigation of transformation trends in each pixel of VC time series using the Mann-Kendall trend test, (d) determination of the pixels with significant VC reduction and the significant starting points of the trend using the sequential Mann-Kendall test, (e) assessment of the correlation between the zones with significantly reduced VC, and (f) a correlation test between average monthly and annual climate parameters and VC. Our results indicate that although 51 ha of VC has been demolished around the mining activities areas (i.e., zone 1), an overall upward trend in vegetation with no chemical leakage is observed into the downstream area of the basin (i.e., zone 3). This upward trend can be mostly attributed to the increasing precipitation and decreasing temperature in the study period. The fact that the area downstream of the mine shows that the heap leaching method for gold mining in Andaryan mine is currently not damaging the vegetation, this likely means that there is no leakage to the surrounding environment from the mine. Our results further show that using NDVI in a pixel-based scale and statistical methods has a high potential to quantify the effects of human activities on surface biophysical characteristics.

RESUMO

The increasing prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) has led to a health crisis. According to official statistics, more than 55 million people globally have AD or other types of dementia, making it the sixth leading cause of death. It is still difficult to diagnose AD and there is no definitive diagnosis yet; post-mortem autopsy is still the only definite method. Moreover, clinical manifestations occur very late in the course of disease progression; therefore, profound irreversible changes have already occurred when the disease manifests. Studies have shown that in the preclinical stage of AD, changes in some biomarkers are measurable prior to any neurological damage or other symptoms. Hence, creating a reliable, fast, and affordable method capable of detecting AD in early stage has attracted the most attention. Seeking clinically applicable, inexpensive, less invasive, and much more easily accessible biomarkers for early diagnosis of AD, blood-based biomarkers (BBBs) seem to be an ideal option. This review is an inclusive report of BBBs that have been shown to be altered in the course of AD progression. The aim of this report is to provide comprehensive insight into the research status of early detection of AD based on BBBs.

RESUMO

Organic surfactants have been utilized with different nanoparticles in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) operations due to the synergic mechanisms of nanofluid stabilization, wettability alteration, and oil-water interfacial tension reduction. However, investment and environmental issues are the main concerns to make the operation more practical. The present study introduces a natural and cost-effective surfactant named Azarboo for modifying the surface traits of silica nanoparticles for more efficient EOR. Surface-modified nanoparticles were synthesized by conjugating negatively charged Azarboo surfactant on positively charged amino-treated silica nanoparticles. The effect of the hybrid application of the natural surfactant and amine-modified silica nanoparticles was investigated by analysis of wettability alteration. Amine-surfactant-functionalized silica nanoparticles were found to be more effective than typical nanoparticles. Amott cell experiments showed maximum imbibition oil recovery after nine days of treatment with amine-surfactant-modified nanoparticles and fifteen days of treatment with amine-modified nanoparticles. This finding confirmed the superior potential of amine-surfactant-modified silica nanoparticles compared to amine-modified silica nanoparticles. Modeling showed that amine surfactant-treated SiO2 could change wettability from strongly oil-wet to almost strongly water-wet. In the case of amine-treated silica nanoparticles, a strongly water-wet condition was not achieved. Oil displacement experiments confirmed the better performance of amine-surfactant-treated SiO2 nanoparticles compared to amine-treated SiO2 by improving oil recovery by 15%. Overall, a synergistic effect between Azarboo surfactant and amine-modified silica nanoparticles led to wettability alteration and higher oil recovery.

RESUMO

Nanotechnology has taken novel approaches to advance cancer therapeutic efficacy employing multifunctional nanocarriers with drug delivery and imaging function. In this work, we designed a biocompatible and affordable fluorescence nanocarrier called chitosan (CS)-carbon dot (CD) hybrid nanogel for cell imaging. The green CDs were synthesized using tomato juice through a simple single-step hydrothermal method. Chitosan polymer was used as a carrier for co-delivery CDs and the anti-cancer drug with low solubility, silibinin (Sil), to design the Sil-chitosan carbon dots hybrid nanogels (CCHNs) system. After optimizing the physicochemical properties of nanostructure by DLS, FTIR, FESEM, TEM, and UV-visible techniques, the successful uptake of the fluorescent nanoparticle conjugates into MCF-7 breast cancer cells occurred. Then we embedded CDs in chitosan nanogel. The resultant CCHNs demonstrated optical properties similar to free-CDs, a desirable size distribution (55.22 nm) with a positive surface charge, a suitable loading capacity for Sil (35%), and drug release vulnerable to pH changes. The fluorescent nanocarrier could transfer Sil to MCF-7 cancer cells without remarkable toxicity. The results of the fluorescent microscope indicated that after 4 h, the solid fluorescent signal was received from cells containing CCHNs compared to free CDs and confirmed the ability of hybrid nanogels to high cellular uptake. This study demonstrates a multifunctional nanocarrier containing therapeutic compounds and fluorescent agents that provide cellular imaging to enhance therapeutic efficacy.

RESUMO

Recent genome-wide association studies reported the association of polymorphic alleles of PHACTR1 (rs9349379 (G)), CDDKN2B-AS1 (rs2891168 (G)), COL4A2 (rs11838776 (A)) and SOD2 (rs4880 (T)) with increased risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). The aim of our study was to assess the association of genetic variants with risk of CAD and its severity and in Southeast Iranian population. This study was examined in 250 CAD-suspected patients (mean age 53.49 ± 6.9 years) and 250 healthy individuals (mean age 52.96 ± 5.9 years). The Taqman SNP genotyping assay was used for genotyping of rs9349379 and rs2891168 variants. Tetra-primer Amplified refractory mutation system-PCR (Tetra-primer ARMS-PCR) was employed for rs11838776 and rs4880. Multivariate logistic regression analyses indicated that the G allele of rs9349379 and rs2891168 were associated with increased risk of CAD. The GG homozygous genotype of rs9349379 and rs2891168 had also been associated with risk of CAD. Additionally, the AG genotype of rs2891168 was associated with CAD. The significance of association of rs2891168 (G, GG, AG) increases with severity of CAD; but the rs9349379 (G, GG) have shown reverse association with severity of CAD. The genetic variants of COL4A2 (rs11838776) and SOD2 (rs4880) reflected no association with CAD in Southeast Iranian population. The findings of this study revealed that the PHACTR1 (rs9349379) and CDKN2B-AS1 (rs2891168) genetic variants might serve as genetic risk factor in CAD.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Near one-fifth of patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) develop major depressive disorder (MDD), an independent risk factor of mortality in these patients. We investigated the efficacy of oral pentoxifylline in treating MDD in CAD patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in a 6-week trial. METHODS: We only included patients with mild to moderate MDD (having a score between 14 and 17 on the Hamilton depression rating scale (HAM-D)). Sixty-four CAD patients undergoing PCI or CABG aged 40-60 years were randomly assigned to either the pentoxifylline (800 mg daily) or the placebo group. The outcome was assessed with the HAM-D at weeks 2, 4, and 6. RESULTS: Patients receiving pentoxifylline had greater improvement in HAM-D scores from baseline at each follow-up than patients receiving placebo (p-value = 0.036 at week 2, p-value < 0.001 at week 4, and p-value < 0.001 at week 6). We found a significant effect for treatment, time, and time×treatment interaction in depression improvement (p-value < 0.001). Rate of remission, treatment response, and adverse effects did not differ between the two groups. DISCUSSION: Our study supports the safety and efficacy of pentoxifylline in treatment of MDD in CAD patients. However, further investigations are required to confirm the generalizability of our results since the results need to be interpreted cautiously because of the imitated range of disease severity for inclusion. This trial was registered with the Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials (www.irct.ir; No. IRCT20090117001556N132).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Reproductive toxicity of cadmium (Cd) as an environmental toxicant has been proved in animals and humans. Exposure to Cd impairs testes organs and can reduce male fertility. The present study was designed to investigate the spectrum of histopathological changes in testicular tissue focusing on Sertoli cells in rats following Cd intoxication. METHODS: In the present experiment, acute testicular toxicity was induced by an intraperitoneal injection of 1.2 mg/kg CdCl2 to the animals in the test group, while the control group received normal saline. After 52 days, the animals were euthanized, and testicular tissue was stained by Hematoxylin and Eosin. In addition, immunohistochemical staining was performed on Sertoli cells for Wilms' Tumor, Melan-A, and CD99 to evaluate histopathological changes. RESULTS: Cd caused significant alterations in seminiferous tubules with varying effects on the patterns of spermatozoa production. These histopathological changes were significantly higher in the Cd group, compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: The Cd-induced stepwise spectrum changes included sloughing, disorganization, hypospermatogenesis, spermatic cell arrest, germ cell hypoplasia, Sertoli cell-only pattern, fibro-hyalinized seminiferous tubules, and calcification. Sertoli cells accumulated and created multinucleated giant cells in the seminiferous tubules during the atrophic process, which could be dependent upon Sertoli cells viability and function.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Inadequate or poor sleep quality is common problems in adolescent that affect on their learning, memory and school performance. The present study aimed to determine the association between sleep hours and academic performance in young adults. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was designed as a descriptive-analytic study. Samples of adolescents of 14-18 years old in Qazvin city were enrolled. The Pediatric sleep questionnaire and BEARS questionnaire used for all students to screen comprehensively major sleeps problems in them. Chi-square test, t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and correlation were performed to determine the relationship between the data (P < 0.001). RESULTS: Between 653 adolescents, 40% were male and 60% were female. Sleep duration, sleep onset delay, sleep insufficient, rate of oversleeping and academic performance had a direct relationship with gender (P < 0.001). The sleep duration, rate of oversleeping and academic performance were significantly higher in boys, sleep onset delay and sleep insufficient was significantly higher in girls. Time of falling sleep at weekend nights and weekday nights have positively correlation with age (P < 0.001). Also, a significant relationship between students' sleep hours with academic performance was shown (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The overall result was that sleep duration, sleep onset delay, sleep insufficient and rate of oversleeping of students in this study had a significant influence on academic performance. Students without difficulty in falling asleep had good academic performance in compared to students with difficulty in falling asleep.

RESUMO

AIM: Depression has been recognized as one of the disorders associated with cardiac interventions such as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG). In the present study, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of sulforaphane in treatment of depression induced by cardiac interventions. METHODS: After initial screening, 66 patients with previous history of at least one cardiac intervention and current mild to moderate depression were randomly assigned to two parallel groups receiving either sulforaphane (n = 33) or placebo (n = 33) for six successive weeks. Efficacy was assessed using the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D) at baseline and week 2, 4, and 6. Safety of the treatments was checked during the trial period. RESULTS: Sixty participants completed the clinical trial (n = 30 in each group). Baseline demographic and clinical parameters were all similar among groups. Repeated measures analysis indicated that the sulforaphane group exhibited greater improvement in HAM-D scores throughout the trial (P < 0.001). Response to treatment (≥50% reduction in the HAM-D score) rate was higher in the sulforaphane group at trial endpoint (30% vs 6.67%, P = 0.042). Remission (HAM-D score ≤ 7) rate was also higher in the sulforaphane group; however, the difference was not significant (23.33% vs 3.33%, P = 0.052). Finally, no significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of frequency of side effects. CONCLUSIONS: Sulforaphane could safely improve depressive symptoms induced by cardiac interventions. Further clinical trials with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up periods are warranted to confirm our results.

RESUMO

This article aims to develop a method for prioritizing indoor environmental quality parameters in the workplace (i.e., temperature, lighting, acoustics, air quality, layout, furnishing, cleanliness and maintenance) to enhance occupants' workspace satisfaction. Data were collected using a web-based survey of 12 Iranian control centre buildings (CCBs) of combined cycle power plants. The results showed that fewer than half of occupants are satisfied with their workplace. Corrective measures would cost the owners an exorbitant amount of money if they were to try to address all of the parameters. Therefore, a statistical analysis framework was applied to determine each parameter's importance in relation to overall workspace satisfaction. Based on detailed analysis, two levels of importance have been defined for ergonomic modification of each CCB. The statistical approach developed in this study can be applied to all kinds of buildings to determine where ergonomic modification is most likely to produce higher workspace satisfaction.

RESUMO

AIM: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between PSS, PH, FCP and QoL of oncology patients. METHODS: In this descriptive-correlational study, 340 oncology patients were selected with convenience sampling method from the hospitals in Tehran 2018-2019. Data were collected using, "PSS," "PH," "FCP" and "European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire, EORTC QLQ-C30." Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics using SPSS21 and Amos. RESULTS: The direct effect and the total effect of PSS and FCP on QoL were significant (p < .001), but their indirect effect was not significant (p > .05) and the effect of PH on QoL was not significant (p = .96). The Root Mean Squares of Error Approximations (RMSEA), Non-Normed Fit Index (NNFI), Comparative Fit Index (CFI) and Goodness of Fit Index (GFI) were estimated 0.07, 0.97, 0.98 and 0.91, respectively.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (anti-NMDAR) antibody positivity in patients presenting with transverse myelitis (TM) and/or optic neuritis (ON), to describe their neurologic and radiological characteristics, and to compare these characteristics with those reported in previous studies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study included 179 patients (ON: 96, TM: 74, ON and TM: 9) who visited Isfahan Multiple Sclerosis Center from January 2017 to September 2019, for approximately 32 months. The respective neurological examinations were performed. Demographic data of the patients, as well as findings from radiological and serological investigations were obtained. RESULTS: Frequencies of anti-NMDAR seropositivity in patients with TM, ON, and concurrent TM and ON were approximately 3.4%, 1.4%, and 11.1%, respectively. None exhibited any psychiatric symptoms. CONCLUSION: Based on the frequency of seropositivity for anti-NMDAR antibody in our patients, positivity for this antibody appears to be more frequent than previously anticipated in patients presenting with these conditions. We recommend that the anti-NMDAR antibody presence in CSF/serum be checked and considered in addition to the routine examinations performed upon confronting demyelinating conditions such as TM and ON. We suggest considering the term "NMDAR spectrum disorder" to more clearly distinguish the potentially overlapping conditions with different etiologies in patients with CNS disorders.

RESUMO

The objective of this study is to examine the effects of omega 3 treatment on rat sperm chromatin condensation, DNA damage and spermatogenesis after bleomycin, etoposide and cisplatin (BEP) treatment. In this experimental study, 40 male rats were divided into four groups: Control, BEP, Omega 3 and BEP + Omega 3. Sperm chromatin condensation and DNA damage were assessed using aniline blue and acridine orange staining, respectively. Results show that the mean percentage of sperms with excessive histone and DNA damage was significantly increased in the BEP group after 9 weeks as compared to control group (p˂0.001). While, in the BEP + Omega 3 group, the mean percentage of sperm with excessive histone and DNA damage was decreased significantly compared with BEP group (p˂0.001). The testicular histomorphometric analysis indicated that omega 3 has a significant effect on the mean number of spermatogonia, primary spermatocytes, leydig cells and testicular histology properties following BEP treatment. The mean count of aforementioned cells significantly increased after omega 3 treatment compared with the BEP group (p˂0.001). Our data indicated omega 3 may be had beneficial effect for improving chromatin condensation, DNA damage during spermatogenesis and testicular histomorphic properties following BEP treatment.
